Mixing
-
Once the songwriting, production, and recordings are complete, a song is ready to be mixed. During the mix, many decisions are made to determine the instrument & vocal levels, balances, tonality, FX, clarity, spaciousness, dimension, and intimacy, to name a few. All of these factors influence the emotional impact of the song for the listener. Mixing is both an art and a science. It takes a deep musical intuition for what ‘feels right’ and it also requires technical prowess in the realm of software, editing, instrument knowledge, and studio gear. The ultimate goal is to bring the song to its full potential; to sound like it is ‘supposed to sound’ - to sound like a finished record.

Every good mix engineer has a specific sound in their mind - a way that they think music should be heard. The vision of this sound is strengthened by having digested thousands of recordings over a span of years. This builds a mental library of sounds, shapes, sonic landscapes, textures, moods, people, personality, trends, and visualizations that they can draw from at any given time. Mixing is an infinite experiment. The magic arrives when the mixer’s tastes aligns with the artist’s vision. The best mixes allow the music to do all the talking, helping a song arrive at its optimal destination. Good mixers dance in the delicate balance of perfecting minute detail while never losing sight of the song’s big picture, feeling the true sum of all its parts and not getting lost along the way. Mixing is a million little decisions - it is the micro and macro all at once, the music is always the ultimate guide.

I offer remote mixing! Mixing sessions may be attended or unattended by the artist. If you and I are located in different cities, you may listen to a high-quality audio stream of my mixing work in real-time via a simple link to be a part of the process or to offer creative insight.

I currently do my mixing and mastering at Cycle Studios which is located in Industry City, Brooklyn. I mix in ProTools and my workflow combines a large array of software plugins as well as analogue summing, analogue compression, and analogue EQ.

If you’d like to learn more about mixing and learn about my processes, I do offer educational mixes. In this scenario, I would mix your project as per normal while also teaching you about my methods as I work. Due to the teaching component, these mixes may take longer to complete and are available for an additional fee. Please submit a mix form below to learn more.
